Oil of Cajeput
For those who are familiar with Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu system of
medicine, Oil of Cajeput is an unsurprising addition to a first aid kit. Like Lavender Essential Oil, it is a natural
antiseptic, in addition to having anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
I use it mostly for insect bites. In
Austin, we have plenty of mosquitoes. Oil
of Cajeput provides excellent relief from mosquito bites when applied directly
to the skin. Within minutes, the itch is
gone and within hours, the swollen bite will dissipate.
It is an excellent insect repellent, as
well. Mix 2 drops of Cajeput Essential
Oil with a mild skin cream or lotion and apply to exposed skin. It can be applied neat to the skin as well,
but smells strong.
It is also an effective decongestant for colds and sinus problems. When 2 drops of Oil of Cajeput are added to a
bowl of steaming water and inhaled with your head under a towel, sinus pain can
be relieved. Or mix 2 drops Cajeput Oil
and 2 drops Eucalyptus Oil with a neutral ointment such as Vasoline, and
massage the throat, chest and back.
